The dog of slain U.S. Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson refused to leave his side during his funeral on Friday.
This heartbreaking photo taken by Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, shows the SEAL’s dog Hawkeye lying by the casket.
Pembleton wrote on Facebook that Hawkeye was Tumilson’s loyal pet who wouldn’t leave his master’s side during the funeral in Rockford, Iowa.
“I felt compelled to take one photo to share with family members that couldn’t make it or couldn’t see what I could from the aisle,” Pembleton wrote.
Tumilson lived in San Diego for eight years before becoming a member of SEAL Team 6.
A memorial fund has been set up in his honor and donations can be sent to Frogman 238 Memorial Fund at:

Cascade Memorial cooperates with local hospice teams to build a rapport with hospice care workers, and in turn, building trustworthy assurance with families.
By establishing a collaborative relationship with hospice and palliative care groups, we are able to provide services to families with accountability. We maintain a level of dignity and respect unparalleled in the industry. We offer bereavement support to the family, including guidance with veterans’ benefits, social security and legal documentation and filing.
When patients in palliative care are approaching death, it is important to discuss end-of-life decisions. Talking, planning, and being better prepared for the last phase of life can let patients in palliative care live fully and more comfortably in their final days, with the consolation of knowing that their wishes will be carried out. It is also beneficial to family members, as it is easier to make these decisions before the loss occurs.
Cascade Memorial offers a variety of affordable and simple options for funeral arrangements, ranging from to more traditional ceremonies.

Everywhere you look, it seems like there’s another advertisement touting a pill or a supplement that can reverse aging or otherwise defeat wrinkles. Never mind that very few of these have actually been proven to work and a lot can be costly, there’s a risk that they can be unhealthy, too. In fact, one recent study found that just one out of every three multivitamins actually has the content on the back of the label. Some have too little vitamins, while others have too much, according to MSNBC.
So instead of trying things that haven’t even been verified by the FDA, you may want to look for anti-aging methods through more natural beauty practices. One of the best products for keeping away wrinkles? Sunscreen.
“Ninety percent of aging is from the sun, and with the increase of skin cancer awareness we need to make sure that we are protecting our skin and taking care of it,” skin care specialist Angela Fredrick told The Kearney Hub.
She advises anyone who is going to spend some time outside to apply sunscreen. Besides the risk of cancer, exposure to the sun can cause liver spots and premature wrinkles. While some people believe that their make-up can protect them from harsh sunshine, Fredrick recommends using sunscreen as well.
Maintaining physical health is the very best way to remain feeling young. While not everyone will be going to the Olympics, senior or otherwise, AOL.co.uk states that remaining focused and consistent with exercise efforts can be an important way to maintain strength, flexibility and health.
“I have seen some reports that claim it is possible to have as little as a five percent drop in cardiovascular fitness from your 20s to your 50s, if consistency is maintained,” writes trainer Matt Roberts.
Looking to keep your brain young, too? Exercise fills that gap as well. Researchers recently concluded that regular physical fitness can improve decision-making skills, memory and attention after a review of more than 100 different studies examining the effects of a workout.
Having trouble getting started? Experts recommend using machines that promote low-impact activity. Resistance training with rows or free weights can be a great way to break a sweat and get moving. Ellipticals have also become popular in recent years, because they don’t cause as much pounding on the joints as a treadmill, but you can get just as much of a workout.

Congratulations to Ellen Snyder of Life Care Center of Kirkland
SNYDER NAMED LIFE CARE’S DIRECTOR OF NURSING OF THE YEAR
Ellen Snyder, director of nursing for Life Care Center of Kirkland, Washington, was named Life Care’s Company-Wide Director of Nursing of the Year on April 20, 2009.
The award is given to the director of nursing who demonstrates outstanding qualities in several areas, including customer service ratings, staff development and successful state surveys.
Snyder received the award during Life Care’s Directors of Nursing Annual Meeting held in Nashville, Tenn. She was selected from all the directors of nursing in Life Care’s more than 220 skilled nursing facilities throughout the country.
During the ceremony, Snyder was praised for:
• Leading the facility to a deficiency-free survey in 2008 and a nursing deficiency-free survey in 2007.
• Being actively involved with local schools of nursing and with nursing organizations such as the Washington Health Care Association and the National Association Directors of Nursing Administration.
• Being available at all hours, all days of the year.
• Encouraging her nursing staff and other associates with cards, flowers and awards for doing their jobs well.
• Providing education to associates regarding disease processes and how to best care for residents with differing needs.
• Taking on projects beyond her normal duties, including answering call lights, cooking meals for associate appreciation and remodeling the public bathrooms.
“I’m truly honored and touched,” said Snyder. “There will be a lot of fun and celebration at the facility. Success comes from enabling your staff. This is a facility award.”
Life Care also honored seven divisional winners and a customer-service award winner.
“Our directors of nursing show love by living our vision every day with our residents, families and associates,” said Cathy Murray, Life Care’s chief operating officer. “We appreciate their leadership in our facilities and their caring actions. They are truly an inspiration.”
“To be a director of nursing requires a very talented individual,” added Dee McCarthy, Life Care’s vice president of clinical systems. “Not only must they possess superior clinical knowledge and leadership skills, but they also need a passionate commitment to consistently providing resident-focused, quality care. Our directors are some of the most gifted in the industry. To be recognized from this group is an incredible honor.”

- July is Bereaved Parents Awareness Month
The Annual Bereaved Parents Awareness Month is in July, to promote support for bereaved parents. Often people do not know what to say to or do for grieving parents. We encourage people to turn back and begin to reach out to bereaved parents and their families by listening to them without advising them; by giving them a shoulder to cry on; and/or by giving them a hug when appropriate and needed.
After the death of loved one, especially a child, many people need continued support from other family members. The American Hospice Foundation encourages families and friends to remember a few key ideas when helping a loved one who is grieving.
Be patient and understanding. Grief will diminish with time, but there is no ‘right’ length of time to grieve. Continue being supportive long after the rest of the world has stopped sending cards.
Expect the unexpected. Some people experience delayed grief, especially if the loved one was ill for a long time or there were many details to arrange after the death. Grief usually surfaces at some point, and he or she may still need help even if it’s weeks or months later.
Don’t neglect physical needs. Grief puts stress on the immune system, leaving the body more susceptible to illnesses. Suggest an appointment with a primary care physician who knows that he or she is grieving.
“People who are grieving often feel alone in their grief,” said David Weiss, Passages Hospice chaplain. “To receive the support of others helps them realize that they don’t have to carry the whole burden themselves. There are others who are truly interested and willing to listen. It’s okay to have that feeling of loss, and to recognize and accept it. In essence, it’s a reflection of the love we have for that person and their memory.”
