In Loving Memory

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Samuel James Foster (“Sam” to his friends) who succumbed from complications after recent surgery on Tuesday morning, January 14, 2014, in Bellevue Washington. Sam is survived by his brother Tom Foster of Prescott, AZ, sister Sally Foster of Phoenix, AZ, daughter Kelly Foster Griffin, son-in-law Tom Griffin, granddaughter Hayley Griffin of Kirkland, WA, and son Donald Foster of Federal Way, WA.

Born in Lordsburg, NM on October 27, 1935, Sam lived with his family and spent his school years in Arizona before moving to Southern California after graduating from college. In January 2010, he relocated to Washington State to be near his son and daughter, living as a resident of the Regency Newcastle Community, in Newcastle, WA.
A constant companion, rain or shine, was his signature black hat. Sam was a kind and gentle soul and loved animals – especially horses and cats. He had a thoroughbred for over 25 years named “Lucky” and a cat named “Prism.” His passion was working with racehorses. Hiking, surveying, and climbing rock formations were other interests. His room was full of agates, rocks, arrowheads, fossils and other ancient artifacts.
Sam, held advanced degrees in Philosophy and Theology from Claremont Graduate School, and was an avid reader and writer of fiction and non-fiction. He loved classical music and played the trumpet in college at the University of Arizona. He was always recognizable by his subtle, dry sense of humor, even up to his last days. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
